Videography – it’s storytelling, it’s attention grabbing and holding, and it’s one of the highest art forms, if I may so humbly say.
Why? Well, it’s how we see the world. If we let ourselves, we can look around – listen to music and have particular interactions that feel like a movie – they feel cinematic.
So, what is videography and what can it do for your business or personal brand?
Thematically and technically, the terms used in cinema can vary drastically. It’s not like photography. Photography is just photographs. It’s light hitting a sensor, and an image is frozen in time.
Films are different. A motion picture is the concept of multiple frames flashing across your eyes in a second – 24 frames per second, to be precise (if you know your camera settings).
If you don’t know your camera settings, 24 frames per second is deemed the be the most “filmic” looking frame rate that you can shoot in – it creates a motion blur which is similar to what the eye sees, so it feels natural.
Whether you call it videography, filmmaking or cinematography – it’s all the same at its core. We’re using cameras to capture clips, out in the real world. After that, we pull the footage into an editing software.
It’s here that we blend these clips with music, sound effects, other audio enhancements, effects on the clips themselves, transitions, colour grades and titles to share a story with an audience.
It’s a timeless tradition, the technology behind the practice gets more and more exciting every year – and I’m so grateful to be able to do it for a living.
I get to be a film nerd and help people at the same time. Because you see, what I really do is I get to know business owners and career professionals, and when they want a short film made – I tell a story on their behalf. That’s it, that’s all there is to it.
Videography in your marketing strategy is an infinitely valuable asset. It goes hand in hand with everything that you do, and literally anything can be accomplished with a good video.
Want to spread some brand awareness? Video.
Looking to make a new hire? Video.
Want to share client testimonials to help potential clients see your true colours? Video.
The list goes on and on - the singular applications and reapplications of good video are endless.
So, what’s beneficial about working with four32 MEDIA as a collective of videographers? Well, at our core – it’s me (Jay Ashcroft) and Jon Lepp. We then spread out and work with various other camera operators and editors in the industry, to get the coverage that we need.
I myself have been making short films since I was in high school. It started with class projects – where you better believe I went a little bit over the top. After this it was the band days with music videos.
In university I studied black and white film photography and majored in studio art before becoming a carpenter for a few years after graduation. My education and real life experience is vast, and I apply it to what I do every day.
My theoretical understanding of art and film as a whole is quite in-depth, and my history as a tradesman directly applied to the rugged physicality sometimes required in filmmaking is infinitely valuable. I can get down and dirty because for a number of years my job has been playing in the mud.
Jon’s a whole other story. The guy is a creative genius, with a history of starting and running 10 piece bands, creating documentary films, self-publishing photo books and on and on. When you’re working with one of the two of us – you’re in good hands.
When you’re working with a whole team of four32 approved creators – then you’re in really good hands.
We care about what we do, we do it every day – and what we do helps people achieve their goals. It’s a rewarding experience, and we take what we learn and apply it to new concepts and directions – on each and every project.
So, that’s all about us. What about you? Have you made short films for your business or personal brand yet? Do you want to? Let’s get started – it may be time for a chat.

To Your Success,
Jay Ashcroft
