I’m going to take your cell phone photography, and I’m going to throw it in the river. It’s an elephant in the room that needs to be addressed. So many times, folks who aren’t photographers will ask me “Jay, why do my photos look like shit?”
I’ll tell them it’s because they took it on a cell phone – and you know what they say 9 times out of 10? “No, it has to be something else.”
Your cell phone sucks. It just does – even professionals have a hard time making the footage or photos from a cell phone look good – so why are we lying to ourselves here?
It’s okay though, I have an alternative. Consider looking at some point and shoot cameras.
You can buy a used Sony in the ZV lineup for somewhere between $600 and $800.
Let’s talk about the benefits of making this move, and why I’m sure it’ll solve a lot of problems for you.
First of all, it’s a question of light quality. Most of your cell phone photos and videos look like trash because there isn’t enough high quality light hitting the censor. This is because most of the censors in a cellphone are about the size of your pinky nail.
The sensor in my full frame Sony camera body is the size of 20 pinky nails. Get where I’m going with this? Now I’m not expecting you to go out and buy a professional camera for your small business’ marketing efforts, but a nice point and shoot for under a grand is a nice in between.
The other thing I’ve heard from non-photographer types time and time again is “Oh, I want to film myself – but there isn’t enough space on my phone,” to which I will recommend that they delete some stuff – and they just can’t bring themselves to do it.
On a point and shoot, you have an external SD card. Fill the card up, dump the footage on your computer and then delete everything off of the card – problem solved.
Now, onto the points of individual skillsets and time management. Another lie we keep telling ourselves is that it’s better to be doing photo and video stuff on our phones. It just isn’t. It sucks. It’s small, building a Reel out in Instagram makes me lose my mind, and editing photos is a nightmare.
With a few tutorials on YouTube and some small pieces of software, you can easily find a way to save your photo and video files on your laptop, and use them as assets to make marketing material all by yourself for your business.
I’m not going to sit here and give you the how on this front – I’m just here to give you the what and the why. The how is entirely up to you.
However, if you have any interest in knowing more about this concept, and you don’t know where to start – then reach out. I’m happy to help.
I’m of the opinion that by moving away from your cellphone and creating on a point and shoot camera for your business, you’ll eradicate a lot of stress, free up some time – and will have a higher quality end product.
Give it some thought and try it out for yourself.
To Your Success,
Jay Ashcroft
