Fear of Criticism – Why it’s Holding you Back, and What to do About it

A photo for a blog about the fear of criticism - why it’s holding you back and what to do about it, taught by Jay Ashcroft of four32 Media, a professional videographer, photographer and marketing specialist who works with businesses in Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, Huntsville, Muskoka and the rest of North America

So, you’ve been thinking about filming yourself to market your business and you’ve been thinking about it for the past 5 years.

There’s been a few times where you hit record – you even almost uploaded a talking head video of yourself once, but then you bailed out at the 11th hour – and this is why.

Fear if criticism – here’s why it’s holding you back, and what to do about it.

I’ve suffered from the affliction for most of my life. I’m sure it’s always had something to do with my upbringing.

My mother’s side of the family has always meant well – they always knew that their constructive criticism was in my best interest – but there was always a disconnect.

I always seemed more interested in learning my own lessons. However, they never let up – and as time went on, I developed a fear of criticism.

If you’ve been suffering from the same issue, then listen up – it doesn’t exist. Reframe it in your mind, and ignore that fear. Create like no one is watching, and then share it online in an endless flow of inventive beauty.

So, who am I talking to? I’m talking to the small business owner or career professional who knows that they need to share more online – that it’ll help them drum up more business, but there’s something holding them back.

You can tell yourself as much as you want that you’re not doing it because of a million other reasons. “I don’t have the time,” “I don’t have enough space on my phone,” “I don’t know how to do it.” You tell yourself this bullshit endlessly.

You and I both know that these are excuses. And, it’s okay – you don’t have to admit it to me or to anyone else for that matter. But the guy or gal that you do need to admit it to is yourself.

Because the truth is that you’re afraid of what people might think of you for sharing. You’re scared, and you don’t need to be. Let me give it to you straight. You’re afraid of sharing because you don’t think it will be good, and someone will either think it’s not good – or even worse, they’ll tell you it isn’t any good.

Here’s the truth – there are varying degrees of garbage. And, you’re going to suck until you don’t. But you only get good through going. What are you waiting for? Do you think Olympic athletes just jump into the game and win?

Of course not. Of course they spend years and years practicing and training. Your content creation journey is no different – except here, you’re practicing in the public eye. And that’s okay, because first of all you’re getting your reps in – you’re practicing and improving.

Second of all, you’re given access to a significant amount of data. For every 9 videos you put up that get no traction, there will be the one that resonates with people. Pay attention, and make more of those.

I’ll leave you with this.

It’s not like you’re going to the downtown strip and walking down the street in your underwear. This shit isn’t real. You’re making a thing, and then you’re uploading it to a small black rectangle in your hand, and then other people are watching it on their small black rectangles.

The small black rectangles are just made up of 1s and 0s. 100101010101010100101010.

That’s it. It’s pretend. It’s digital information, and it’s malleable. No one cares as much as you think that they do. Everyone has their own problems. So dive in and build your business to the level you know it’s capable of.

As always, if you need a hand with any of this – I work with small business lovers just like you. You know where to find me.

To Your Success,

Jay Ashcroft
