Whether you want to admit it or not, there are certain days that just run better than others. And if we’re really honest with ourselves, we’ll likely notice that the way our days begin start to trickle down into the way the rest of our day goes.
Case in point, get a good start to your day and you’ll be in good shape to weather any storm that comes your way.
These are some productivity hacks for you – and how to build out your morning routine to have your best day.
Chances are you’ve been circling around the ideal morning routine for some time now. If that sounds like you, then good on you – don’t stop searching.
If this is the first you’ve heard of optimizing a morning routine, then that’s okay – and it’s very exciting.
Listen, everyone is different. Some people don’t need to do a bunch of prep before they dive into the day, others do.
I’ll speak about my own experience only to give you some context here.
When I had no idea what I was doing, no sense of direction, no clear enjoyment in my work, or at that time – my job – I would hit snooze a half a dozen times, roll out of bed at the 11th hour – brush my teeth, grab a quick bite to eat after I throw some water on my face, bring coffee to go, smoke a dart on the car ride in and generally arrive 1-2 minutes late.
Throughout the rest of the day – I was faced with a never ending series of crappy happenstances and reactions to things that felt out of my control. Everything was a frantic and intense rush to the finish – I always felt behind.
Now, I know that’s an extreme example. And I’m sure we’ve all been there in our early 20s. For me – of course, this stopped. It stopped when I started my own business. It stopped when I got on the self-education train, and began the constant and uphill battle of self-improvement.
Over the past 5 years, I’ve dialed in my non-negotiable morning routine. And it only takes an hour. So listen. If you have to get up at 7, just get up at 6 instead. Try it.
My routine is as follows: yours will be and should be different.
Out of bed, start the coffee. Read for 20, write in the brain dump journal for 20, meditate for 20. That’s it.
I do this every morning.
Now, your routine? Maybe you ditch the meditation because it’s too weird and instead you ride the stationary bike and go for a walk.
Maybe you take the dog out for a pee. Who knows, it’s up to you.
But the important bit is that you ease into the day. I enjoy this time in the morning. I contemplate and consider (in my mind) the list of to-dos I wrote down last night. I clear my head and get on the path I need to be on to have a good day.
Now, there are people who argue that a morning routine isn’t necessary – and good for them. It would be pretty awesome to just dive into the work and create high quality output all day.
But if you’re more of a creative mind, and you need to do some mental warm ups before you get started on your high value tasks, then you’re a bit like me.
Dial in your morning routine and do it every day. You’ll find yourself to be infinitely more productive, focused, and clear about your intentions and directions each and every day.
